Meeting 21 – PodCamp NYC on our minds

Written by angelo on May 2, 2008 – 7:45 pm -

During tonights meeting we discuss PodCamp NYC with Todd Cochrane from the Geek News Central. Todd has attended PodCamp Boston and the more recent PodCamp NYC. Todd gave us some suggestions for scheduling the sessions. Apparently PodCamp NYC did not have an event guide nor event swag bags. Todd also recommended that we have a few organizers actively blog to the Podcamp Ohio blog and post @PodCampOhio twitter messages what is happening throughout the day of the event.

We discussed the initiative to help less fortunate seniors obtain digital TV converter boxes. For more information, please refer to the WOSU Public Media Collaborates to provide DTV converters to Seniors post.

We also discuss the room availability that we received earlier this week from ITT Technical Institute. In a nutshell, we have access to 5+ rooms during the morning and access to all rooms in the school after 1:30 pm. We designated a room to function as a First Aid / Practice Podcasting room.

We finished the night discussing sessions, the event guide, creating help document to hand out to attendees for starting podcasting.

There is a New Media Cincinnati meeting this weekend, if you’re in the Cincinnati area this Saturday and want to attend please RSVP on the New Media Cincinnati Facebook site, www.newmediacincinnati.com.

WOSU Public Media Collaborates to provide DTV converters to Seniors

Written by mary on May 1, 2008 – 9:17 pm -

WOSU Public Media has teamed up with Lifecare Alliance and Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA) to provide converter boxes to low-income seniors in central Ohio. Many seniors live on a fixed income and can’t afford cable TV and rely on local news for information. Lifecare Alliance provides Meals on Wheels to seniors and COAAA provides resources and services to seniors in the central Ohio Community.

You can help provide a converter box for a senior by going to the dtv2009.gov web site and requesting coupons for the converter boxes. When you get to the on-line form, check under TV service that *All or some of the TV’s in my house subscribe to one or more pay services.*
This collaborative has special permission to do the project.
When you receive the coupons (it may take up to two months, so time is of the essence) you can drop them off at WOSU Public Media at 2400 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, Ohio 43210.

WOSU will purchase the converter boxes and provide them to Lifecare Alliance and COAAA. Their volunteers will distribute the converters and install them. The volunteers will receive training on how to install the boxes and are best suited to this job because they already have a relationship with the people they serve.

These groups are also asking central Ohio bloggers to blog about it and share it with their readers. Don’t forget to announce your new blog post on Twitter. If you are not yet a blogger, share the link to this post in an email to your friends. Lets get the word out to as many central Ohioans as we can. Thanks!

Mary Wehrle (Merrycricket)
